Activism bio (charitable work)
Matt Damon is an actor who has also done some writing and producing.
Most of the charities in which he's involved are children's and medical charities. In addition to the two links listed above, he has raised funds for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, "The Painted Turtle" camp founded by Paul Newman for children with serious illnesses, and the Oklahoma City Children's Center, which is a private care facility that offers special education and rehabilitation for children with disabilities.
He generously hosted a party at his new Beverley Hill club to help raise funds for the Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation. This fund helps provide care and support schemes for patients and their families who are suffering from brain cancer. Matt stated, "I am so happy to help support what Tim & Tom Gullikson established," and gave a healthy cash donation towards the fund, helping to raise $90,000 in combination with the generosity of other donors.
Matt has contributed a voice over to a TV Ad to defeat Bush for the Moveon PAC entitled The Disappeared, written by Darren Aronofsky and directed by Doug Limon (www.commondreams.org/news2004/0818-08.htm).
He helped raise money for one of his mother's favorite causes at a benefit screening of The Bourne Supremacy for the International Physicians Against Nuclear War. "If you have a voice, you should use it," said Damon. "In my case, I'd rather speak out than shut up."
Matt also spoke as a former Harvard student at a Progressive Student Labor Movement's Living Wage Campaign rally for Harvard University employees, "This is the richest university in the world, and the fact that the people who keep the machine running--who feed the students, look out for their safety and clean their bathrooms and hallways--are not given a living wage is demeaning to us all."
Matt narrated the film, Howard Zinn: You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train (the title is taken from Zinn's recent autobiography). This film is about the life and times of Howard Zinn, the famous historian, teacher, activist and author of the landmark book A People's History of the United States. Zinn's life and work, including civil rights and anti-Vietnam War activism, have been a catalyst for progressive change in America for more than 60 years. While growing up in Boston, Matt was a friend and neighbor of Zinn, and Matt's Good Will Hunting character famously touted Zinn's book. Says Zinn about Matt, "He’s a very socially conscious and serious person."
