Act of Killing (The)
117 min.
Between 1965 - 1966, an estimated 500,000 to 3,000,000 Indonesians were brutally purged by army-backed death squads under the guise of anti-communist patriotism. The director of this documentary invited several death squad leaders to re-enact their experiences, which they agreed to, dramatizing the re-enactments with elements from their favorite gangster, Western, and musical films. Shockingly, this use of the film-within-a-film conceit allows for the formerly unrepentant murderers to admit to their crimes and to reflect on what they have done.
