Directed, produced and starring Kevin Costner, this movie garnered 7 Academy Awards. Costner plays Dunbar, a cavalry soldier manning the post on the frontier after winning a medal for his courage in the civil war. Living alone in the middle of nowhere, he comes face to face with the Native Americans living around him, and over the course of the film, he becomes more and more a part of their tribe and culture. This film is remarkable because it is an epic western that sees the world through a Native American perspective. It is a respectful and loving depiction of tribal culture which breaks the mold of previous westerns by raising questions of who the good guys and the bad guys really were.
