Deadly Sounds in the Silent World; Deadly Sounds in the Silent World II

The critical issue examined in the Save the Whales Again! campaign is that of underwater noise pollution. Their later film, Deadly Sounds in the Silent World II, examines deadly impacts on sea mammals and other ocean life of sonar and other deafening man-made noises. Few people are aware of the magnitude of the problems.

Dangerous underwater noise (which is one form of noise pollution) is caused by an increasing proliferation of high-intensity, human-made, underwater noises produced by seismic surveys for underwater gas and oil exploration, the military (naval sonar), ship engines, and underwater dynamiting for demolition, which now fill the seas. Such noise is so intense that it needlessly injures, deafens, and even kills marine life, including dolphins, whales, and it is heavily depleting fish all over the world.

"Deadly Sounds II" was presented and distributed to delegates at the June 7th, 2005, meeting of the United Nations' Law of the Sea Conference, and calls for the UN to regulate underwater man-made noise, to ensure our oceans' health and safety, and that of marine life; such regulation would also ensure our own.

As for the earlier film, "Deadly Sounds in the silent World," it was voted the "Best Short Film of the Year" at the 2003 Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival, and explores something most people are unaware of: a major threat to our ocean ecosystem created by human-generated noise in the oceans. Extremely powerful active sonar systems developed by the US Navy to detect super-silent submarines are needlessly injuring, deafening, and killing marine life. There is a solution: the Navy has passive sonar systems that detect such submarines yet do no harm to marine life. Distributed to Congress, this film calls on Congress and the U.S. Navy to fulfill its dual mission of American national security and stewardship of the seas.
